On one of my first trips to Africa, I met a little girl by the name of Abbie. Adopted by a missionary couple in Zambia little Abbie was born into a life that by American standards would not be fitting. Her mother a prostitute carrying HIV and her father . . . well anyone of the many serviced gents. Abbie is beautiful! More than just a beautiful smile, Abbie loves people and loving people. She would wake in the morning with such joy and excitement and a love for seeing people. Something not many children her age feel comfortable doing. During my summer stay with Abbie and her family; she helped me learn that American standards of living in excess is something that none of us really need. I played with cars and trucks made out of metal hangers (and incredible toys they were!), Bocci ball from painted rocks, and enjoying conversation when love was the translation. I learned that summer that giving in excess to children isn’t love but teaching a child shows it! In my case; Abbie and her family taught me how to love unconditionally and for that I’m grateful.
Wow, what a touching and inspirational story. We (or should I say "I") tend to take everyday objects for granted. I hope to take a missionary trip sometime in my lifetime (it's on my bucket list):) Thanks for sharing!
